Apart from zoom lenses, another type of lens is called “prime lens”. Primes lenses are lenses with fixed focal lengths. For example, 35mm, 60mm, 200mm.
Most of the time, the minimum aperture values for prime lenses are lower than that of zoom lenses. Find out more about aperture values for zoom lenses. Generally, the lower the aperture values, the more expensive the lenses are. So, what is so great about prime lenses? Prime lenses produce images that are sharper and of higher quality than zoom lenses. On the other hand, flexibility is sacrificed. Unlike zoom lenses where more flexibility is offered, prime lenses cannot be “zoomed” and the photographer has to use his manual zoom (read legs) to achieve the desired composition.
